The Delegation of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS is organising a short video competition on sexual and gender-based violence as a means of eliminating its prevalence in society.

The objective of the competition is to stimulate the awareness of Nigerians on issues of gender-based violence, ensuring that the voices of young people are heard and taken into consideration when shaping and implementing programmes and policies in Nigeria.   

Entrants are asked to express what they understand by sexual and gender-based violence and ways to eliminate it in society.  Unleash your creativity in a three-minute video to illustrate the positive changes you would like to see.  Express it with moving pictures using a true-life story or fiction.

Eligibility for 2021 Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) Short Video Competition

  • The competition is open to all Nigerians.
  • Sending an entry implies acceptance of the rules and regulations governing the award.
  • Videos can be narrative, story, animated or experimental and can be entered by professional or amateur video makers.
  • Local language videos must be subtitled in the English language. Mixed language videos must have English subtitles.
  • No entry/registration fees are charge for the submission of videos.
  • All music/soundtrack rights must be cleared before videos are submitted. Consent of performers and/or persons appearing in the videos must be obtained before any video is submitted.
  • Entrants grant organizers’ permission to use excerpts for promotional purposes on various media channels.
  • The entrant acknowledges and agrees that all matters not covered by these rules and regulations, and questions arising from them, will be decided at the sole discretion of the European Union.

How to Record Your Short Video

You do not need to be a professional filmmaker to be a part of the competition. If you plan to use your mobile phone to shoot the video, please follow the guidelines below:

  • Put your phone on air mode to avoid interruptions during recording
  • To get steady shots, use a mobile tripod, selfie stick, or hold your phone steadily
  • Ensure that you get good audio. Be careful not to block the microphone on your phone with your palm when holding the phone during recording.
  • Make sure you have good light

Promotional Images

Entries must be accompanied by a minimum of three high-resolution images from the video to be reproduced, published and/or exhibited for promotional purposes as it pertains to the competition.

Length of video: maximum of three (3) minutes
Credits: ensure your video has all relevant credits

Theme

Your videos can be centred around but not limited to:

  • Physical violence
  • Sexual violence
  • Psychological violence

Key dates

Call opens: December 28, 2020
Entry closes: January 29, 2021
Jury review dates: February 1 – February 5, 2021
Screening: March 8, 2021

Prizes for 2021 Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) Short Video Competition

There will be ten winners for the overall best videos. 

  • 1st Prize: Video editing desktop
  • 2nd Prize: Video editing laptop 
  • 3rd Prize: DSLR camera
  • The 7 best runners-up will receive a grant of N500,000 each.
