With the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup going on, the focus is again on the U-20 women’s team, or the Falconets, as they are usually referred to. The U-20 team made its debut in 2002, and has since then performed quite well, even making it to the World Cup finals on two occasions. In the African Games held back in 2019, they brought home the gold medal for the game.

Till now, the Nigerian team has put on a spectacular performance, which has grabbed the attention of the whole world, for sure. In fact, it is one of the best teams at the World Cup being hosted by Costa Rica. Nigeria has been placed in Group C, and managed to win against three teams, which places them at the top of their group. Although Nigeria has always qualified for the World Cup, getting top position in their group has been a rare occurrence for the team.

Their first match was against Frane, and after a long wait (they had to be suspended due to heavy rain), Nigeria managed to score a goal in the first half. France tried to sneak in a goal of their own, but their efforts were in vain, as Nigeria won 1-0. The next match was against South Korea, and records show that the Nigerian U20 team has never lost to Korea. The streak continued, with Nigeria defeating South Korea 1-0. The goal was long awaited, as Nigeria could only score it in the 83rd minute of the game. Their last match was against Canada, and it was a nail-biting match with the score reaching 3-1. Initially, the match did not seem to be going well for the Nigerian team, as Canada scored a goal in the very beginning of the match. But the Falconets held on, and not only prevented any more goals from Canada, but also managed to score three goals of their own. With this phenomenal performance, Nigeria won all their group matches, and made it to the quarterfinals with 9 points on the table.

Their next match is against Netherlands, and it is a team that Nigeria has never faced before. The Dutch team is only making its 2nd appearance in the World Cup, after debuting in 2018. But if previous performance is considered, Nigeria has performed exceptionally well against European adversaries. Moreover, the team seems to be in amazing spirits after the victories, and looks forward to bagging a few more wins. A lot of praise has been showered on their coach, Christophe Danjuma, who is probably one of the major reasons for this outstanding performance of the team.
