Numbers speak louder than words… More than 95% of participants in the ILO Just Transition Forum consider innovation critical to a just energy transition – but that such innovative solutions are hard to find.
The shift to sustainable energy requires innovative solutions and breaking with business as usual, while ensuring that the transition is just and leaving no-one behind. The ILO is dedicated to finding and accelerating such innovations. We therefore launched the Just Energy Transition Innovation Challenge- open for applications now!

What are we looking for?
The ILO is looking for innovative solutions and approaches that will accelerate a just transition in the context of decarbonizing energy systems;benefit from ILO’s technical support and can be showcased. Such solutions and approaches must be grounded in the ILO Guidelines for a Just Transition and support bold climate action and decent work creation.
We accept submissions that are already beyond the first conceptual stage, thus ideas and solutions that have been tested and are ready for scale-up. The applicant must be able to document the initial work and efforts made in advancing the idea, and how the assistance from the ILO will benefit the scale-up of the solution.
What will the winners receive?
- The ILO will select 3 winners amongst the proposals and solutions submitted.
- All 3 winners will benefit from technical assistance equivalent to the value up to 50.000 USD. They will be linked up with experts through ILO’s Just Transition Innovation Network and gain global visibility allowing them to present their innovative ideas to potential partners and the public.

Who can apply?
The Challenge is open to government agencies, employers’ and workers’ organizations, cooperatives, NGOs, civil society organizations as well as education, training and research institutions.
