Imagine designing and implementing a sustainable project that tackles the social justice issues you’re passionate about on a local and global scale! In this immersive year-long program, you’ll meet and learn from young activists, influencers and experts on how to make a difference in the most pressing issues in your community and the world.
The Youth Leadership Academy (YLA) will place you in a supportive, engaging environment where you’ll:
- Develop your personal leadership style
- Learn to advocate for policy change
- Build knowledge of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and issues around gender inequality
- Become an expert in designing and implementing social justice projects

At the YLA, you’ll make lifelong friends and become a part of Plan’s national network of young leaders who are advancing gender equality and elevating young voices. By the end of the program, you’ll have implemented an impactful project that engages your peers and makes a difference in your community, with the support of a mentor from Plan’s Youth Advisory Board.
Eligibility:
- Young people who are currently in grades 8-11.
- Interested in global issues, gender equality and making an impact in your community.
- Currently based in and/or attending school in the United States.

The Plan
After the Youth Leadership Academy (YLA), you’ll become part of Plan’s national network of young leaders making change in their communities and around the world.
You will be able to implement your Leadership Development Project (LDP) during the 2022-23 academic year on the social justice issue of your choice. Throughout the academic year, you’ll meet with your assigned mentor on a monthly basis, attend quarterly skill-building webinars, access seed funding to launch your project and have opportunities to connect and engage with Plan’s global youth network and partners.
After the YLA, you’ll become part of a network of young people leading change all over the world. You’ll be invited to special events, have the opportunity to advocate for policy change, apply for Plan’s Youth Advisory Board and engage in activities to advance gender equality — like Plan’s International Day of the Girl Youth Summit.

Cost to attend and Scholarships
Plan strives to ensure there is no financial obstacle to participate in our programs. The total cost of the year-long program is $500 and includes all remote instruction and all costs associated with the residential academy in Washington, D.C., including room, board and all activities. Participants are responsible for covering travel costs to Washington, D.C.
