Welcome back everybody to the third monthly writing contest from The Rain. I have been radio silent for the last couple of weeks as I have been gearing up to begin the show on December 18th, but I am excited to announce this month’s contest, Curiosity Killed the Cat. I am reading over all of your wonderful submissions for November’s contest, and I am loving everybody’s different takes on the prompt! After attempting the prompt for myself, I realize how difficult of a theme it truly was, and I am proud of each and every one of my submitters for their valiant efforts at such an abstract and chewy topic.

I ask you to submit a short story (apologies, but this contest isn’t open to poetry) about a new discovery, invention, or insight that seems wonderful and glamorous on the outside, but which is truly insidious beneath the surface, or which goes terribly awry. Think H.P. Lovecraft, Coraline, and Frankenstein.

While you are working on this contest, I also recommend taking a look at the weekly Flash Fiction prompts! Flash prompts will be returning on December 5th, and they are a great way to get the creative juices flowing. Flash prompts will be taking a different tack when they return later in the month, and each week’s prompt will be related to the monthly prompt in some way, helping writers to get their heads in the zone to write a gripping short story for the monthly contest. Submitting your Flash story to the archive gets your ideas out into the world for your peers to read and provide feedback and support.

As ever, I wish you the best in all your endeavors, and I cannot wait to see the masterpieces that you put together!
