FWGE Day 7: Reflections by Ntseka Masoabi

On intimate moments of the silent night,
the music dances smoothly in the other room,
the glitter, staining the wrinkled cream-white sheets,
marks a trail of fossils left by old lovers
on sandy pits of fragile hearts.

These are the nights I, the lonely lover,
reflect on the feelings hidden
inside the heavy African vace
I clench on,
for long,
terrified that my arms will grow hopeless
and release all the precious memories of
the love
we abandoned.

Our love was never romantic, yet I always felt the best part of myself in you.

Our love was genuine words spoken on a rainy Sunday afternoon just
before 5 o’clock when you said,
The way you make me feel,
with the stretch of your lips reaching, with open palms,
underneath both  your lower eye lids
as if to prepare to catch a precious box full of gold
and love poems.

Our love was the feeling I had after hearing you say that –
fulfilled,
hopeful and
content.

I still think about you
I still think about us
