The short story competition now in its fifth year is run by the Library, Technological University Dublin [TU Dublin] – Tallaght Campus, in association with South Dublin County Council and the Red Line Book Festival.

This year’s a competition welcomes submissions from around the world and will be judged by award-winning author Rob Doyle. The competition offers €500 as first prize, €250, €150 for the second & third respectfully.

Eligibility

  • The competition is open to any living person over the age of 16.
  • International entrees are welcome to apply.
  • Anyone who has not published a novel can apply.

Submissions guidelines

  • The competition is limited to one entry per person.
  • Entries must be in short story format between 1,500 and 2,000 words long, no other formats or lengths will be accepted or judged.
  • Entries should be completely the entrant’s own work written in English (high standard), original, unpublished, and not entered into any other competition, nor submitted for publication, or another award which overlaps with this competition. (No simultaneous submissions)
    • Stories must be original fiction, i.e. neither a reprint nor adaptation of previously-published work – (including on any website, public blog, online forum or broadcast medium)
    • No third party shall have been granted any license or other rights to the submitted short story.
  • Entries should be typed in Arial font size 12,  in double spacing, with neatly numbered pages, and the name of the short story in the header of each page.
  • Entries should be submitted with a front cover page using BOLD font stating the title of the short story, the word count, the entrant’s name, address, phone number and email address.
  • The name of the author must not appear on the same page as the story.
  • All submissions are final, no changes or substitutions to a story are allowed once your entry is received.
  • All entry submissions will be acknowledged by AUTOMATIC email. No other form of communication will be undertaken before the final results are communicated. If you do not receive an acknowledgement e-mail after submitting your entry please contact the organizers.
  • Participants should retain a copy of their entry as the files uploaded online will not be available after
  • No restriction has been on theme or styleof writing.
  • Entries will not be eligible where the author is a member of the judging panel. Anyone involved in the administration of the competition or a close family relative of any such person should not apply.
  • Employees of South Dublin County Council and Employees and Students of TU Dublin are eligible to enter, except where working directly with the administration of the competition.
  • ​Decisions on all eligibility issues will be at the discretion of the competition organizers. Their decision will be final.
  • Shortlisted authors under the age of 18 may require a guardian’s consent to have their details shared, if shortlisted.
  • International entries are welcome.
  • The judges’ decision is final.No correspondence will be entered into. No criticism or advice will be provided.

Prizes

  • First Prize:         €500
  • Second Prize:    €250
  • Third Prize:        €150

Benefits of being shortlisted

  • The organizers of the competition intend to have the winning and shortlisted entries published in an anthology, or other formats. Non-prize winning published entries will receive no remuneration.
  • The 2020 anthology of shortlisted stories will be called ‘Creation, Cosmos, & Caboodle’, although there is no restriction on theme or style for entries, writers are invited to respond to this title if they wish.
  • The deadline for submissions is Wednesday 19th August.
  • Winners will be announced at a special event as part of the Red Line Book Festival, which returns for an exciting ninth edition from Oct 12th – 18th 2020.
  • Falsification of information and/or identity, plagiarism, racial discrimination and bigotry will see entries disqualified.
