Since Columbia University was established on May 25, 1754, in New York in the United States of America, no Black woman has ever finished residency in urology until now.

Urology, which is also known as genitourinary surgery, is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary-tract system and the male reproductive organs.

According to the smart Ghanaian doctor, it took tremendous support from God, her parents, awesome siblings, family, fabulous friends, wonderful mentors, sponsors, and lover for her to attain this feat.

She also noted that every step of her journey has been full of hard work and countless sacrifices. Currently, the doctor has initiated her next big step after starting her fellowship in andrology (Sexual Dysfunction and Male Infertility) at the University of California.

Thankful Tuesday: I can’t let COVID detract from my testimonial and celebration ๐Ÿ™๐ŸฝThe meaning of Tuesday has many derivations, most notably linked to gods of war and victory. My name Abena is Asante for “born on Tuesday”. I don’t find this parallel to be accidental! Every step of my journey for this Bronxonian and Ghanaian gal has been HARD work and countless sacrifices. I am super proud to be the FIRST Black woman to complete Residency in Urology at Columbia University! ๐ŸคฉThis would NOT have been possible without the tremendous support from God, my AMAZING parents, my awesome siblings, my family, my fabulous friends and SiStars, my wonderful mentors and sponsors, and bae. ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’– It truly takes a village to raise a doctor ๐Ÿฅผ My heart remains so full. ๐Ÿฅฐ I am excited to start my first day of Fellowship tomorrow at UCLA in Andrology (Sexual Dysfunction and Male Infertility).
