EWGE: Two Poems by Olajide Gbenga Emmanuel

The Life Out there

I imagine the life out there, to be of

Counting stars till the period of time.

But remember, those stars will fade out soon,

And you won’t get to know those stars you’ve counted.

I imagine the life out there, to be of

Ages, expanding like a band in your eyes;

As you wear ignorance like a dress,

When the clock ticks hours,

Thousands time of sun rises then sets for another rising.

You don’t know, you’ve been doing it clockwise, again and again.

Ha! You’ve hidden the memories of home under the stark of clouds.

But remember home, as it once cast your image upon the mirror,

Which your mother claims of, in her hands.

Great voyagers!

The voyage is to be of a man who ploughs and never looks back.

Glance to the ancient door to see the vision of ancient doing,

And may you not be of bastard!

For you spit what your mother spit.

Great voyagers!,

At far miles, board your ship at the shore.

Those who cease off the wave of fear in their heart,

We split the kolanuts for their safety.

Come home

come home.

The Reflection

They say “I can’t use a bit of spoon to fetch a lagoon”

Well, my father isn’t the type, who nurture this saying in his heart,

For he prove it by drowning me to the sea to see my portrait on its still waves.

They say “I can’t use a bit of spoon to fetch a lagoon”

But that same lagoon, he never fed me with fishes only,

But also taught me how to cast my nets for fishing.

Mine is now what I have seen, each time I look into the lagoon,

Seeing my earthworms made the call for the great marine.

Little lad has become this shadow behind this candlelight,

which has widen in size and shape more than it entity.

Little lad is of the age of purple hibiscuses bowering via the ray of sunlight.

All what my father had written, on the template of my heart remains

And all what my eyes had seen are the reflection of my future being.
