5 Paying Literary Markets to Submit to in November 2019

PodCastle

This is a fantasy magazine. They print stories in an audio format and online. They are open to all the sub-genres of fantasy, from magical realism to urban fantasy to slipstream to high fantasy, and everything in between. Fantastical or non-real content should be meaningful to the story.

Deadline: 15 November 2019
Length: Up to 6,000 words (occasionally publish novelette reprints, though these are harder sells)
Pay: $0.08/word; $20-100 for reprints

Black Cat Mystery Magazine

They want contemporary and traditional mysteries, as well as thrillers and suspense stories. They are looking for “Private eye stories, cozy stories, and edgy, noir-tinged stories—all of which happen to contain a crime of some sort. We want stories with characters who feel real, in situations that are possible (and plausible), and of course great writing”, from their guidelines. They do not want flash fiction, poetry, or routine revenge stories – see guidelines for the list of elements they do not want in their fiction.

Deadline: 30 November 2019
Length: 1,000-8,000 words (will read up to 15,000)
Pay: $0.03/word up to $250

Ninth Letter

This literary magazine is open for fiction, nonfiction and poetry submissions. They also accept translated works. They want work that experiments with form, narrative, and non-traditional subject matter, as well as more traditional literary work.

Deadline: 30 November 2019
Length: Up to 8,000 words for prose, 3-6 poems
Pay: $25/page, up to $150

 

The Iowa Review

This literary magazine accepts poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and translations. This prestigious magazine often introduces new writers. There is no fee for mailed submissions.

Deadline: 30 November 2019
Length: 25 pages for prose, 8 pages for poetry (query for longer poems)
Pay: $0.08/word for prose ($100 minimum), $1.50/line for poetry ($40 minimum)

 

Sirius Science Fiction

Their tagline is ‘Original stories in the neo-classical science fiction tradition’. This website publishes speculative fiction – science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, and horror. They like stories with a sense of wonder and excitement. They publish one short story a week.

Length: 1,000-4,000 words
Pay: $25
