DAAD University of Hohenheim AgEcon Scholarships – A limited number of scholarships are available for outstanding AgEcon candidates from developing countries. These scholarships are provided by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) under its special initiative “Development-Related Postgraduate Courses” (EPOS).

The DAAD initiative aims at providing academically educated young professionals from developing countries with further specialized studies. The typical scholarship holder will come either from a public authority, a state institution, or a private company in a developing country and as such be engaged in the planning and execution of directives and projects with an emphasis on development policy.

DAAD scholars will receive a monthly stipend of EUR 850 over the two-year AgEcon program period and will do a two-month intensive German language course before the program starts. The German language course is an integral part of the DAAD initiative. It takes place in the months of August and September at a Language Center in Germany.

Scholarship Details

The selection for the DAAD scholarships is highly competitive. Only developing country nationals with at least four years of full-time university education and an outstanding Bachelor’s degree can apply.

In addition to the general AgEcon entry requirements, scholarship applicants need to prove a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience. Graduation from university should not be longer than 6 years ago.

Scholarship Requirements

In order to be eligible to apply for the scholarship, applicants must:

Candidates fulfil the necessary academic requirements and can be expected to successfully complete a study programme in Germany (above-average result for the first academic exam – top performance third, language skills)
Candidates have a Bachelor degree (usually a four-year course) in an appropriate subject
Candidates have at least two years of professional experience
Candidates can prove their motivation is development-related and be expected to take on social responsibility and initiate and support processes of change in their personal and professional environment after their training/scholarship

The Typical Scholarship Holder:

Works either for a public authority or a state or private company in a developing country and, as such, is engaged in the planning and execution of directives and projects with an emphasis on development policies having a bearing on technological, economic or social areas.
Holds a Bachelor’s degree (normally four years) in a related subject.
Has completed an academic degree with far above average results (upper third) and at least two years of related professional experience after the first degree (bachelor) at the time of application.
His/her academic degrees should normally not be more than six years old.

Scholarship Duration and Reward

Depending on the academic level, monthly payments of 861 euros for graduates or 1,200 euros for doctoral candidates
Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover
Travel allowance, unless these expenses are covered by the home country or another source of funding

Under certain circumstances, scholarship holders may receive the following additional benefits:

Monthly rent subsidy
Monthly allowance for accompanying members of the family

Required Documents

To apply, candidates must be ready to submit the following documents;

Signed DAAD application form with the current date
Personally signed CV (please use the sample Europass form at http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/) with the current date
Personally signed Letter of Motivation (with reference to current occupation and choice of postgraduate programme(s), two pages maximum) with the current date.
Letter of recommendation from your current employer; the letter must have letterhead, a signature and official stamp and must be of the current date (not in a sealed envelope)
Certificate(s) of Employment from the employer(s) that prove a minimum of two years of relevant working experience (after the bachelor degree) at the time of application and if possible, a guarantee of re-employment from your current employer upon returning home.
Proof of Language Skills:
o English – IELTS or TOEFL (Note: The institutional TOEFL is not accepted)
o German – required for courses taught in German
Copies of Academic Degrees (certified translation if necessary)
Copies of Academic Transcripts, incl. grading-scale (certified translation if necessary)
Applicants from the People’s Republic of China are asked to submit an APS Certificate with their application documents.

How To Apply

Download, fill and sign the official DAAD application form and make sure to prepare all required documents as described on the DAAD program website

Unlike stated in the DAAD scholarship application form, please scan and email the application for the DAAD scholarship (as PDF files) to agecon@uni-hohenheim.de.
Professors and employers can also be requested to email the “Letters of recommendation/reference” directly to the same email address.
Please upload all the required application documents for admission into the AgEcon program and make sure to fill out the online application. The online application portal is open for applications for the winter semester by the middle of November of the previous year.

In addition to the documents required for AgEcon program admission, you have to describe your current work situation at the time of application and submit a letter of reference from your employer, confirming the exact duration of employment and, ideally, guaranteeing re-employment after completion of the AgEcon Master’s program.

To be considered for the DAAD scholarship, you MUST be currently employed! If you aren’t able to prove to us that you have at least the required 2 years of relevant professional work experience, then you are NOT qualified for the DAAD scholarship. In this case, you are advised to apply as a “self-sponsored” applicant. The requirement of two years of professional work experience refers to the time of the start of the scholarship period. This means that it is not absolutely necessary to have already completed two years of professional experience at the time of applying. However, these two years MUST be completed before you come to Germany.
