The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme started in1987 with the aim of promoting grass-roots international exchange between Japan and other countries. In 2018, the JET Programme welcomed 5,528 participants from 54 countries. Since the beginning of the JET Programme, there have been more than 68,000 participants from 73 countries around the world.


The JET Programme is administered by Japanese local governments in cooperation with:

  • The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC)
  • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA)
  • The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)
  • The Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR)

JET Programme participants are appointed by prefectures and municipalities throughout Japan and work in local government organisations or schools.

  • Period of Participation: In principle, participation is for a one year period starting from the day after arrival in Japan.
  • If the contracting organisation deems the participant’s work performance is of the required standard, it is possible to renew for up to a total of three years. If performance is deemed to be exceptionally high, it is possible to renew for up to a total of five years.
  • Work Hours 35 hours per week (JET participants usually work Monday to Friday, but this may vary according to each contracting organisation)
  • Holidays ・Saturday, Sunday, Japanese national holidays, paid leave (minimum 10 days, in principle). * Due to work circumstances, JET participants may be asked to work during weekends and national holidays.
  • Remuneration: JET participants are guaranteed remuneration of approximately 3.36 million yen for their first appointment. Remuneration increases with subsequent appointments.
  • Assignment: JET participants are assigned to local government organizations and schools throughout Japan. Although requests are possible, assignments may differ from the locations requested.


In order to be eligible to apply for the offer, applicants must:

  • Be interested in Japan and be willing to deepen their knowledge and appreciation of Japan.
  • ALT and CIR applicants must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree or obtain such qualifications by the designated arrival date (July/August or April).
  • Be a national of the country where the recruitment and selection procedures take place.
  • Not have lived in Japan for six or more years in total in the past ten years.

The recruitment and selection of JET participants is conducted at Japanese embassies and consulates around the world. Applications received by the deadline are screened and interviews are conducted for select candidates.
