This is a three-year National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Global Health Palliative Care (GHAP) Training Fellowship for an African candidate currently resident in Africa. It will enable a talented clinical or non-clinical African individual to complete a substantial research project related to palliative care and rehabilitation. This is part of the ongoing GHAP-expanding access project in Uganda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe funded by NIHR.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The post-holder will be registered at King’s College London and work closely with PhD students within the Cicely Saunders Institute of Palliative Care, Policy and Rehabilitation and other GHAP PhD students registered with the University of Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe, Makerere University in Uganda and University of Cape Town in South Africa.
  • The PhD study will be carried out in an African country where the successful applicant resides and the student will be expected to spend some time at the Cicely Saunders Institute.
  • We are seeking an innovative, well-organised, dynamic and promising African citizen currently living in Africa who are motivated to further develop their career and benefit patient care through research into palliative and end-of-life care.
  • Relevant MSc degree in health or social sciences, medicine, nursing, psychology, palliative care or similar
  • A commitment to the advancement of palliative and end-of-life care
  • Excellent research related computing skills – competent in word processing, familiar with reference management databases, and the foundational competencies to enable the transferal of these skills to packages to support qualitative (e.g., NVivo) and quantitative analysis (e.g. SPSS)
  • An ability to work well as part of team, including with other researchers, students, clinical staff, patients, and family members
  • An ability to work to deadlines and manage and prioritize workloads appropriately
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • An ability to grasp new information and learn new skills quickly
  • A commitment to high-quality research and care delivery
  • A willingness to travel, including internationally, when required for the project and conference

Benefits of KCL African Training Fellowship

  • The fellowship provides a stipend (£16,125 – £16,711 per year) and covers the full international PhD fees at King’s College London.
  • The candidate will be given an opportunity to develop a research question that aligns with any of the three workstreams within the overall programme.
  • The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with and learn from world renowned researchers and clinicians to establish themselves as promising leaders within the field of palliative and end-of-life care. Their outputs will benefit the care of patients with life limiting illness, their families, and the clinicians who care for them. They will have access to a wide range of training opportunities within KCL and GHAP.
  • The student will develop a diverse set of research skills, including qualitative and quantitative methods, and gain experience in research of national and international significance. With the guidance and mentorship of experienced researchers, they will lead the design, implementation, and dissemination of a research study related to palliative care or rehabilitation. They will be active in supporting the ongoing GHAP program of research, training others and spreading knowledge with current and future leaders in the field. Additionally, the post-holder will have the opportunity to undertake leadership training alongside their research.
