Mark Zuckerberg Reveals Scheduled Launch Date for Nigerians to Begin Earning via Instagram

Meta, the parent company overseeing renowned social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram under the ownership of Mark Zuckerberg, has announced plans to introduce a new feature on its Instagram app. This feature aims to empower Nigerian creators by enabling them to monetize their content directly. The disclosure came from former UK Deputy Prime Minister and current President of Global Affairs at Meta, Sir Nick Clegg, during a visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja on Thursday. Set to be unveiled in June 2024, this feature is poised to provide indigenous content creators with opportunities to earn a livelihood through the platform.

Sir Clegg expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for issuing an Executive Order that facilitated the establishment of a Meta-supported deep-sea cable in Nigeria, poised to spark potential multi-billion dollar economic ventures across Africa.

He described the project as an exceptional infrastructure endeavor, highlighting its anticipated launch in the first quarter of 2025. The cable is expected to possess twice the capacity of all existing subsea cables and has been buried 50 percent deeper beneath the seabed compared to others. This depth enhancement ensures enhanced power and broader geographical connectivity, promising significant advancements in telecommunications infrastructure.

“It could yield up to 37 billion dollars worth of increase in economic activity in the next two or three years across the African continent. We have a lot to do with Nigeria to deepen partnerships,” Sir Clegg stated.

During his speech, Tinubu asserted that his administration aims to position Nigeria as the leading hub of information and communications technology in Africa.

To achieve this goal, the President emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to ongoing investments in digital technology. These investments are intended to bolster the resilience of small businesses and foster opportunities across various sectors.

As outlined in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the President underscored Nigeria’s imperative to remain abreast of technological progress in this era of rapid advancements.
