COVID-19: Why lockdown will not be called off anytime soon – NCDC

The director-general of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Chikwe Ihekweazu has given reasons why the lockdown will not be called off anytime soon.

The Director-general while speaking at the presidential task force briefing on COVID-19 on Friday revealed that due to the incessant increase in the number of confirmed cases in the country, the lockdown currently in place will take a little while longer.

Ihekweazu called on Nigerians to be patient as measures are being put in place to curtail the effect of the virus and to restor normalcy. He however admitted to the negative effect the lockdown currently have on the economy.

According to him, there is need to be patient with the lockdown in order to ensure a safe and healthy society when the economy would be reopened.

He said, according to dailypost, “We will eventually exit this stage and restart our normal life but that stage is still a while to come and I ask for your endurance, support and patience. Lots of efforts are going on across the world to find new therapy, to find vaccines.”

Chikwe Ihekweazu further stated that the NCDC are working hard to reach a point where some measures can be relaxed adding that an unprecedented level of caution is needed to continue to carry out these preventive measures.

He however made it known that the corporation and sacrifices Nigerians are making to help the government achieve this common goal is well recognized.
